Review: Avengers: Endgame Home Video Release

Avengers: Endgame is available digitally now and will be on disc tomorrow.   This film is the culmination of 22 Marvel movies for an epic final challenge.  Endgame’s plot picks up where the previous Avengers film ends and half the planet’s population (and Avengers) are gone.   The remaining members of the team assemble and embark on a series of quests to restore what has been lost which leads to a final battle.  Several of the story lines from this chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) are wrapped and hints of what is to come are dropped.  For more on the film here is Maggie’s review of Avengers: Endgame from the theatrical release.

This home video release is available in many formats including Digital, 4K and Blu-ray.  Bonus features vary slightly based on the version and retailer.  The core features are a full length audio commentary, a tribute to Stan Lee,  four character featurettes, other features that highlight the directors, women of the Marvel Cinematic Universe(MCU) as well as six deleted scenes and a gag reel.    For a full listing and description of the release here is the press release for Avengers: Endgame Home Video.

I had the opportunity to review the Blu-ray/Digital pack.   Overall I thought this was an average set of offerings.   I found the Stan Lee tribute entitled: Remember Stan Lee to be very well done and a highlight of the offerings.  The piece uses clips from interviews with Stan to go through all his cameos over the years and share some of his thoughts on what Marvel became.

I also enjoyed listening to the director’s commentary for the film.  They discuss some of their decisions and share what went into making them.  I thought the featurette entitle the Russo Brothers: Journey to Endgame could have been used to explore more of these topics and showcase what goes into films like this.  The bonus feature skimmed the surface but the choice of a  five minute featurette does not really have time to explore the subjects.

I felt that this release missed an opportunity to have an extended look at the making of the MCU.  Instead the bonus features were a very standard offering and fall short of matching the scale and scope of the film.  I compared them to the feature length documentaries released with some of the Star Wars films.  In the case of Star Wars the documentaries have time to go in dept on a variety of subjects and really showcase the film.   With the Avengers the bonus material is tradition in the sense that the pieces are around five minutes or less each.

This initial release of Avengers: Endgame will round out your Marvel library.  The bonus features showcase several of the characters and offer some deleted scenes that you may find interesting.  If you want to revisit the film and go a little bit further with the characters & hear the director’s talk about the film you will enjoy this release.
