Shanghai Disney Resort Celebrates the Year of the “Tigger”

Shanghai, February 1, 2022 – Shanghai Disney Resort welcomed the Year of the Tiger today with authentic Spring Festival customs and experiences, featuring a special traditional Chinese eye-dotting ceremony in front of Storytellers Statue. For the first time since the opening of the resort, Tigger, the cheerful and bouncy tiger from Winnie the Pooh joined Minnie and guests as Mickey and Joe Schott, President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, dotted the eyes of two slumbering lions in a traditional ceremony to bring fortune and prosperity to guests.

Shanghai Disney Resort’s yearlong 5th Birthday continues with its special Spring Festival celebration, providing more opportunities than ever before for guests to experience unique traditions and celebrate this joyous time with family. The festivities run until February 16, and during this period, guests can enjoy a host of traditional Spring Festival experiences throughout the resort, including exciting performances, special activities, culinary delights, beautiful decor, celebratory merchandise, and more.

To cheer on the Year of the Tiger, the cherished Disney tiger, Tigger, is all dressed up as he joins Mickey and his pals in donning exclusively designed new costumes with exquisite Spring Festival-themed elements. Together, the Disney friends welcomed guests on Mickey Avenue, expressing positivity and goodwill for the Lunar New Year.

The Garden of the Twelve Friends has transformed into the annual wishing garden, refreshed with brand new Spring Festival decorations, including special lantern arches at each entrance of the garden. Guests can write their New Year’s wishes on wishing cards to share wishes for good health, luck, prosperity, or anything they like throughout the year ahead. Tigger’s mosaic wall, representing the tiger in the twelve Chinese zodiacs, presents another unique photo opportunity for guests with fun decorations and auspicious Spring Festival details to celebrate Tigger’s special year.

Every morning, Tigger, alongside Mickey, Minnie and their friends, will lead the “2022 Spring Festival Drum Ceremony” through dynamic drumbeats and joyful music, filling each morning of the festive period with hope and happiness. Beginning February 2, for the first time ever in the Gardens of Imagination, guests will also be able to witness the Lion Dance, an auspicious Chinese extravaganza that conveys vitality and good luck for the New Year.

The nightly spectacular “ILLUMINATE! A Nighttime Celebration” is followed by the surprise-filled show “Our Families.” For a limited time only from January 31 to February 16, 2022, the show will light up the sky with unique fireworks in the shape of the Chinese character for “tiger,” bringing the celebratory atmosphere to its fullest and wishing guests a magical coming year beyond imagination.

*The show may be modified subject to operational adjustment from time to time.

Guests can also discover the Spring Festival Carnival on select days in Disneytown, where they can explore a diverse and interactive assortment of traditional Chinese folk art-based activities such as calligraphy, puppet shows, dough figurines and so much more. In addition, from February 1 to 5, Disneytown guests will also have the opportunity to watch Lion Dance and Dragon Parade performances as they celebrate a prosperous New Year with their families and friends.

As we welcome the Year of the Tiger, we also recognize that all species of tigers in the wild are critically threatened. Shanghai Disney Resort is committed to promoting habitat conservation for Amur Tigers in China and protecting endangered species. The resort has been supporting World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) and One Planet Foundation (OPF)’s Amur Tiger Conservation Program since 2018, including sponsoring its annual Northeast Tiger Habitat Patrolman Competition and building ranger capability. In order to promote greater awareness of wildlife conservation efforts in China and inspire future generations, trained tiger and leopard rangers from Northeast China have been invited to Shanghai Disney Resort to join the resort’s Earth Month activities, sharing adventurous Disney stories with the community through Disney Reading Together, and serving as Grand Marshalls for Shanghai Disneyland’s iconic Mickey’s Storybook Express.
