Home Video Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Home VideoGuardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 is now available on various digital and disk formats.  This is the final film in the trilogy.  This film has Rocket Raccoon as the focus and you learn more of his history as the Guardians set off on this new adventure to protect one of their own.  For more on the film here is Maggie’s review from the theatrical release back in May 2023.

Bonus features include a couple featurettes, deleted scenes and a full length director’s commentary.  For the full technical specifications and overview here is the initial home video press release.

  • The Imperfect, Perfect Family (11:08) – A traditional featurette featuring interview clips from the cast as the evolution of the trilogy is explored.
  • Creating Rocket Raccoon (9:25) – James Gunn discusses the creation and background of Rocket. This is from the character development perspective and a little of the team behind the scenes of what it takes to bring Rocket to the screen. I would have preferred to have seen this expanded and more discussion on the technical aspect of creating Rocket.
  • Gag Reel (5:59) – A traditional gag reel.
  • Deleted Scenes (8:30) – Eight scenes, each with a title graphic, but no other information or description.
  • Director’s Commentary (Full Length 150 minutes) – James Gunn talks throughout the film sharing some stories and insight about the production and history of hist last Guardians film.

The bonus features for this initial home video release relies on the Director’s Commentary to carry them. The rest  of the features total about 35 minutes and they do not really dig that far into the creation of the film given their brevity and almost ½ is devoted to the deleted scenes and gag reel..  I would have really liked to have seen more.  For example they could have explored more of the making of or even the impact of the trilogy.  With the theme park attractions and holiday special.  There are opportunities there but they were not taken with this initial release.

If you are a fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy and director’s commentary this release is something to consider for your library. If you are a fan of traditional making of and home video featurettes you may find this release lacking.     The film starts streaming on Disney+ August 2nd, the assumption is there will be no bonus features included there during the initial release but an Assembled special at some point as they have done for other Marvel films on the platform.
