Maleficent: Mistress of Evil 4DX Experience

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 4DX, Is It Worth It?

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” hits theaters this weekend just in time for Halloween. The chilling sequel to the 2014 live action remake, “Maleficent,” is filled with magic, adventure and mystery. The majestic landscapes and captivating performance by Angelina Jolie as Maleficent make it a great movie to see in premium formats like 3D or IMAX. For those looking for a fun new experience, and are not prone to motion sickness, 4DX might be right for you.

4DX is a cinematic experience with motion enabled chairs and added effects. It incorporates elements of the film into the auditorium in hopes of creating a more immersive environment. Some of the effects include: wind, strobe lights, scents, mist, water drops, fog, fake snow and even bubbles. Each element is matched with the scenery and choreographed to the motion of characters whether that be running in battle or skipping through water.

I was recently invited to experience the film in 4DX at a screening.   Overall, I was thoroughly entertained by the 4DX experience. The added effects were especially enjoyable during the scenes in the magical land of Moor and while Maleficent was flying. The motion, wind, bubbles and floral scents created a unique atmosphere which added whimsy and amusement. Seeing “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in 4DX felt more like a Disneyland attraction than a typical movie screening.

However, the experience was almost too stimulating with so many things to feel, see and hear. Instead of creating a more immersive environment, each element was a reminder of the physical space of the theater and was at times distracting. Luckily “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” does not have a complicated plot and I didn’t mind the disruptions. But for those invested in the storyline or have young children, it might be overwhelming. Spending the extra money to see “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in 4DX is worth it for Disney fans who are excited by the movie and looking for an amusing adventure.
