Review: Four Disney+ Series On Home Video This Week

This week four Disney+ series are arriving on home video in a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray offering.  Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi the complete series, Star Wars Andor the first season, Marvel Studios The Falcon and the Winter Solder first season and Marvel Studios Moon Knight the first season.

Blu-ray and 4K UltraHD versions were released.  I was sent the Blu-ray version to review.  Each set comes in a collector’s tin with concept art cards and features all episodes of the season/series as well as some bonus materials.    This is the same format as previous offerings for other series.   Like the previous offerings I thought the tin cases were a nice collector’s item and the concept art interesting to see and fun to collect.  I found the way the discs are in the cases a challenge to get out though.  I am always afraid of damaging a disc.

For more details on the release, here is the original press release.

If you are a fan of the series and want to have physical copies vs relying on streaming these are worth considering to add to your collections.  Most of the bonus material is available in documentaries on Disney+ already, there are a couple new features that a fan of one of the series may really enjoy.  Below is a listing of the features and some of my thoughts on several of them as well as their run times.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi – The Complete Series

Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Complete Series

Over half an hour of bonus features plus a full length commentary highlight this set. The featurettes all seem to be material from the one hour documentary available on Disney+, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi – A Jedi’s Return.  The unique offering to this release is the full length commentary of the season finale by the director.  This is the only release to have such a commentary out of all the Disney+ series that have come to home video so far.

  • Duels of Fate: Obi-Wan vs Vader (11:22)  – An extended featurette taking a look at lightsaber battles of Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in the series and in films before. Interviews include Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen.
  • The Dark Times: Villains (11:46) – Take a deeper look into the who the Inquisitors are and Darth Vader’s look in the new series.
  • Designing The Galaxy (10:57) – An exploration of the new world’s in the series and a look at Lola (Leia’s droid).
  • Director’s Commentary –Director Deborah Chow provides an full length commentary for the series finale episode.

Star Wars: Andor – The Complete First Season

Andor: The Complete First Season

While watching the half dozen of featurettes totaling just about 40 minutes, I felt like I had seen them before.  There is no current Disney+ documentary showing up so not either my memory is bad or my searching or it has been removed.  All are traditional featurettes.

  • Ferrix Part 1: Imperial Occupation (8:18) – The creative team of Tony Gilroy, Kathleen Kennedy and Diego Luna discuss the series’ origins.
  • Aldhani: Rebel Heist (7:42) – A look at the on location filming in Scotland taking a look at the characters, training, and some of the visual effects.
  • Coruscant: Whispers of Rebellion (8:44) – A deeper dive into the characters on Corusant.  Explore the stories of ISB agent Dedra, Senator Mon Mothma and spymaster Luthen Rael.
  • Narkina 5: One Way Out (7:30) – A closer look at the Empire’s prison including a visual effects breakdown.
  • Ferrix Part 2: Fight the Empire (7:35) – A discussion of the season finale.

Marvel Studios: The Falcon and the Winter Solder – The Complete First Season

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: The Complete First Season

The primary bonus feature is the hour long Assembled documentary that streamed on Disney+ already.  There area a four traditional features included but they are short and do not provide a lot of insight into the series.  If you enjoy deleted scenes two are included but with no context or explanation I found them lacking.

  • Assembled: The Making of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (59:30) – This hour long documentary premiered on Disney+. The documentary features interviews with the creative team and the cast discussing the series.
  • Cap’s Shield (5:04) – A short featurette with some cast interviews discussing the shield and showing some of the work that went into adding it to the series.
  • Gag Reel (2:04) – A standard Gag Reel.
  • Deleted Scenes (2:26) – Flight Lesson and Still Funny. The combined two scenes are under two and half minutes and are presented with no context or information.

Marvel Studios: Moon Knight – The Complete First Season

Moon Knight: The Complete First Season

Just like the Falcon series this one follows the same format with the primary feature being the Assembled documentary then a few more classic features on the second disc to accompany it.

  • Egyptology (6:09) – Taking a look at some of the Egyptian mythology of the series and the various Gods that are featured.
  • Assembled: The Making of Moon Knight (64 min) – This is the same show that has been streaming on Disney+. It takes an in depth look at the creation of the series featuring interviews with the cast and creative team.
  • Deleted Scenes (3:48) – There are two scenes, “Don’t’ Go There” and “Breaking the Cycle”. No introduction or description is provided.
  • Gag Reel (2:11) – A traditional gag reel.
