My First Impressions: Inside Out 2 Home Video Release
Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is now available on Digital and Home Video Formats. This sequel rejoins Riley’s world as she enters her teenage year. Anxiety voiced by Maya Hawke, Ennui voiced by Adele Exarchopoulos and Embarrassment voiced by Paul Walter Hauser join the cast from the original film as Riley navigates situations we are all familiar with.
This home video release includes a variety of formats including a Limited Edition Collectable Steelbook version, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD in addition to several digital services. I was given the opportunity to review the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital version.
There are a trio of bonus features:
- New Emotions (11 minutes) – An introduction of the new emotions and the voice talent behind them. Some limited insight from the animators and others involved in the film provides a glimpse at the new emotions and their roles in this traditional bonus feature.
- Unlocking the Vault (8 minutes) – Part of the creative team from the film watch and discuss the “Vault” scene. I always enjoy these types of conversations and this one fit the classic mode. I like to hear from the creators to gain insight into the process and some of the behind the scenes inspiration and processes. At under 10 minutes this is a moderate length bonus feature that left you wanting more.
- Deleted Scenes (23 minutes total) – Kelsey Mann, the director, introduces each of the five deleted scenes – Cold Open, Broken Joy, Pool Party, Puberty Park, and Shame Spiral. The scenes are in story board form.
The bonus material included in this initial home video release was on the this side for my preference. The quality of each piece was good and I appreciated the introductions to the deleted scenes. I found the overall volume and selection to be lacking through. For a film this large and popular I would have liked to have seen more than three bonus features totaling just over 40 minutes with more than half devoted to deleted scenes.
If you are looking to add Inside Out 2 to your personal collection this is an obvious choice. If you enjoy deleted scenes there are over 20 minutes devoted to them. If you are a fan of in depth and a wide variety of bonus features you are going to be disappointed with this release and should look into the bonus features before making your decision. Disney+ has announced the film will begin streaming on September 25th but no mention of bonus materials or a documentary as of my writing this.
