Review: Lilo & Stitch – Ultimate Collector’s Edition
The original Walt Disney Animation Studios Lilo & Stitch film from 2002 is being re-released on Home Video as the Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The package includes 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital versions of the film. This release has an assortment of classic bonus features including a full length commentary, Stitch in Time and the Inter-Stitch-als. Here is the full Lilo & Stitch 4K press release with all the details.
I received the 4K/Blu-ray/Digital version to review. I watched the Blu-ray version since the digital was not available yet and I do not have a 4K disc player. The bonus features on the disc have all been released in previous editions and clocked in at just under 30 minutes if you exclude the full length commentary. Here is a quick run down of what was on the disc:
- Hula Lesson (3:36) – A featurette discussing the history of hula and some of the key steps to the dance.
- Animating the Hula (3:04) – A traditional making of featurette looking at how they brought the Hula to life in the film. It shows a comparison of the reference footage to the animated sequences.
- DisneyPedia: Hawaii – The Islands of Aloha (8:46) – Take a tour of the Hawaiian Islands and learn a little about the Big Island of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai.
- Music – A trio of offerings including two music videos and a brief behind the scenes visit with Wynonna as she records the credit song. All three felt really short to me and
- “Burning Love”: Behind the Scenes With Wynonna (1:32)
- “Can’t Help Falling In Love” A*Teens Music Video (1:02)
- “Your ‘Ohana” Music Video (2:11)
- Audio Commentary – Producer Clarke Spencer and writers/director Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois discussed the film. This traditional commentary I think first showed up on the 2009 home video release of the film.
- A Stitch in Time: Follow Stitch Through the Disney Years (3:31) – A fun look at how Stitch has been around/involved/missed opportunities in a number of Disney films.
- “Inter-Stitch-ials”: Theatrical Teaser Trailers (4:21) – Stitch interrupts Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King in these four teasers for the original theatrical release. I thought these were well done when I originally saw them leading up to the film and they have withstood the test of time and are still fun to revisit all these years later.
With the label of Ultimate Collector’s Edition I was expecting more on the special collectors front, but it appears the Ultimate is referring to the 4K resolution of the release and not the offerings including. It was great to see some of the classic material and I find the Inter-Stitch-ials to be great. I see the release as a missed opportunity to do something new. Its been 23 years and some retrospective or summary or even something to directly promote the live action film all would have been logical additions to the offerings. Or even something on the 4K process to make the film look as good as possible.
Lilo & Stitch Ultimate Collector’s Edition is for you if you are looking to expand your 4K disc collection or missed one of the many Blu-ray offerings over the years. If you are looking for bonus content and already own previous versions you will be disappointed in this release.
Note: Lilo & Stitch is currently available on Disney+ and it has some extras, four deleted scenes and four early versions of scenes, none of which are included in this offering. Also note this is a standard HD version, not the new 4K version as of now.
