Home Video Review: Marvel Studios Captain America: Brave New World

Marvel Studios Captain America: Brave New World is now available on home video both digitally and various disc formats.  Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) returns as Captain America.  Captain America is thrust into a global conflict with newly elected president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) where he is called upon to save the world.

Captain America: Brave New World

The film was released on a number of formats. I was provided the 4K/BluRay/Digital version.  In addition to the move a handful of bonus features are included.  The center piece is the full length commentary by Julius Onah the Director and Kramer Morgenthau the Director of Photography.    For full details check  out the initial press release on the Home Video Release of Marvel Studios Captain America: Brave New World.

My first impressions of the bonus material:

  • Assuming the Mantle (11 min) – This traditional featurette includes interviews with the cast and several crew members discussing where Sam Wilson came from and where he is heading.  They took a look behind the scenes at some of the making of this film and the character.  I found this to feel a little rushed for how much is covered but an interesting piece to watch.
  • Old Scores, New Scares (9 min) – Another traditional featurette looking at the characters Captain America battles in this film including The Leader, Red Hulk and Sidewinder. Again this felt condensed to me and I was left wanting to hear more.
  • Gag Reel (2 min) – An average gag reel of outtakes and on set moments with the cast.
  • Deleted Scenes (Totaling 4 min) – Three scenes that can be played individually or at once. There is a title card but no other commentary or introduction for them.  I always find deleted scenes with commentary and context more interesting than just random clips.
  • Full Length Commentary – It was interesting to hear the director of photography talk and share that angle of the film making process. Most commentaries are directors or writers.

The bonus material that is included is par for the course now a days. It clocked in at under 30 minutes if you exclude the commentary.  This seemed short for a major film like this.  I was expecting more, either longer pieces or a few more.  The quality of what is there is good and the first two featurettes were interesting to watch.

Captain America: Brave New World is a solid initial home video release.  If you are looking to expand your 4K or physical disc collection then considering this film for your library is a given.   For everyone else you need to weigh if the commentary and a few short bonus features are enough for your tastes.

Note: Captain America: A Brave New World arrives on Disney+ May 28th.  The assumption is there will be no bonus material based on other releases so far.
