Book Review: We Will Rock Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins

We Will Rock Our Classmates – We Will Rock Our ClassmatesBook lovers will twist and shout for this new rockin’ companion to the #1 New York Times best-selling We Don’t Eat Our Classmates.

Penelope is very good at being a T. rex dinosaur and she also likes to rock out on the guitar! The school talent show is coming up and she cannot wait to perform for her classmates. However, showing who you really are can be super scary, especially when it is not what others expect. Will Penelope get through this phase with a little help from her friends?

Daughter’s Reaction

Both of my daughters love dinosaurs, so this story was quite amusing to them. The silly humor throughout the book made them laugh and they enjoyed talking about the illustrations they saw. My younger daughter said she really liked the book because Penelope plays a red guitar just like her Dad. Both kids enjoy looking at the vibrant colors of the pictures as they turn each page.

Overview

Just like the first book of the Penelope series, We Will Rock Our Classmates is a hilarious and creative story about a dinosaur who just wants to have fun and show off her talent to her classmates. But doubt starts to come in and her school questions if dinosaurs can even play the guitar. The lesson in this sweet and heartwarming story, sprinkled with some hints of twisted humor, is to always follow your dreams no matter what others think.

I like Higgins’ sense of humor because it just makes the book enjoyable for both children and adults. Like my daughters, I found the illustrations to be very fun and engaging as they were both telling me what was happening in the pictures. This is my favorite part of reading out loud to my kids as it starts conversations. When they re-tell the story back to me, I am able to gauge their reading comprehension. Overall, I think this book is a fun one to read out loud and maybe act out to young children. We Will Rock Our Classmates is written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins and is suited for ages 3 – 10.

If you enjoy this book, here are some fun activities to do with the kids:

Due to the on-going pandemic, I have my two daughters (ages 4 & 8 years old) at home, doing distance learning combined with homeschooling while I am balancing working from home. We enjoy discovering new books to read and discuss. I have received several Disney Books from my Fall Homeschool Reading List and will be sharing reviews of them. Here is my Fall 2020 Children’s Disney Book list.
