Review: Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts Volume 2

Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts Volume 2To celebrate Disney100 Walt Disney Animation Studios is releasing a series of Classic Disney shorts on home video. The first set, Mickey & Minnie 10 Classic Shorts Volume 1 was released earlier this year and the second set, Mickey & Friends 10 Classic Shorts Volume 2 is now available digitally and on various disc formats.    For full technical specifications of the offering here is the press release.

Volume 2 follows the same format as volume one.  Each short has a brief introduction (30-60 seconds) featuring the character voices over clips and stills from the short talking about memories of that adventure then the short plays.  After the final short is a brief closing segment in the same format.

The shorts included in Volume 2 are:

  • The Band Concert (1935)
  • Pluto’s Sweater (1949)
  • Mickey’s Trailer (1938)
  • Pluto and the Gopher (1950)
  • Mr. Duck Steps Out (1940)
  • Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
  • Boat Builders (1938)
  • Tugboat Mickey (1940)
  • Winter Storage (1949)
  • Pluto’s Party (1952)

I always enjoy revisiting classic Disney shorts and this collection has several that are high on my favorite list including Lonesome Ghosts, Mickey’s Trailer and Boat Builders.    I saw the same missed opportunity with this release as I did with volume one earlier this year, they opted not to include some bonus material to better tie in the Disney100 celebration.  The introductions were fun but more evergreen and not specific to the anniversary.  There was nothing on the release really tied to the celebration besides the graphic on the cover and title screen of the disc version.

Just like the previous version on moviesanywhere there are no sections/chapters, its an 80+ minute single item.  The disc version has the option to play all or an individual short with its introduction.

If you are working to build out your physical library this collection makes a nice addition. If you are looking for something unique for Disney100 you may be disappointed in the introductions and lack of anything else.   I checked and all 10 shorts are currently available on Disney+ (as of July 8, 2023).  The Disney+ version does not include the introductions, those so far are exclusive to the home video release.
